Will Residential Living Affect Existing JKM Assistance?

Moving into a supported residential setting may affect certain JKM assistance. The outcome depends on the type of assistance, the resident’s circumstances and JKM’s assessment.
1. What happens to BPT after moving into paid residential care?
BPT refers to Bantuan Penjagaan OKU Terlantar/Pesakit Kronik.
Under JKM’s current guidance, BPT is intended for a family member or individual providing intensive care within a family environment.
If the person receiving care moves into a paid residential care centre, BPT generally cannot continue under that arrangement. A residential centre also cannot be named as the BPT caregiver.
Families receiving BPT should speak to their district JKM office before the resident moves into Co-Living. They should not assume that the assistance will continue unchanged.
2. What happens to BTB after moving into paid residential care?
BTB refers to Bantuan Orang Kurang Upaya Tidak Berupaya Bekerja.
Living in a paid residential care centre does not automatically disqualify someone from BTB.
According to JKM, an eligible person may still be considered for BTB when:
The residential centre provides paid services and facilities.
The centre does not receive JKM’s Geran Rangsum.
The applicant continues to satisfy all other BTB eligibility requirements.
These requirements currently include being a Malaysian citizen residing in Malaysia, being registered with JKM as a person with disabilities, being unable to work and meeting the applicable age and income conditions. Final approval remains subject to JKM’s assessment.
3. Will BTB automatically continue after admission?
No. Even if the resident appears to meet the requirements, continued assistance is not guaranteed.
JKM may review the person’s:
Residential arrangement
Centre fees and funding status
Individual income and other financial support
Disability registration
Medical confirmation of inability to work
Other relevant circumstances
Families should report the change in living arrangements and obtain confirmation directly from JKM.
4. What should families do before admission?
Before the resident moves into Co-Living by Hatching, we recommend that the family:
Contact the Pejabat Kebajikan Masyarakat Daerah (PKMD) managing the existing assistance.
Explain that the person is considering admission to a paid supported residential programme.
State which assistance the person currently receives—particularly BPT or BTB.
Provide the proposed admission date, residential fees and supporting documents when requested.
Ask JKM whether the assistance will continue, be reviewed, be changed to another scheme or be discontinued.
Request the decision or guidance in writing for the family’s records.
5. Can Co-Living by Hatching confirm a resident’s eligibility?
No. Co-Living by Hatching cannot approve, continue or terminate JKM assistance.
We can provide relevant supporting documents, such as an admission or fee confirmation letter, for the family to submit to JKM. The final decision belongs to JKM based on the individual case.
Important Reminder
Please do not cancel an existing benefit or assume it will continue based only on general information.
Every family should obtain written confirmation from their district JKM office before admission or any change in living arrangements. JKM requirements, assistance rates and administrative procedures may also be updated from time to time.
